Statement of launching the Campaign “They are in Media”

Today, the first activities of the 16 Days of Activism to Combat Violence Against Women campaign begin. It is a global campaign launched by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University, New Jersey, Led by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and UN Women since 2008. This campaign aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world. It calls for global actions to raise awareness, strengthen advocacy for that goal, and provide opportunities to discuss challenges and solutions. The United Nations General Assembly has chosen the slogan “Unite! Struggle to End Violence against Women” as the theme for this year’s celebration (2022).

The campaign starts today on the 25th November; the International
Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on 10th December; the International Human Rights Day.

Violence against women is the most widespread and continous human rights violation in the world today, 45% of women reported that they or other women they know have been subjected to some form of violence against the woman.

Locally; women in Egypt are subjected to many forms of violence everyday, especially in light of the privileges that the society granted to men in various fields, in addition to the social and cultural legacies that play a major role in preventing women from obtaining many rights of them.

And because of society’s view that still sees differences between women and men, women face many challenges and obstacles inside and outside the workplace. In press and media sector, female journalists and media professionals are exposed to additional pressures than their male counterparts, just because they are women. For example, we find that female journalists and media professionals are more are more vulnerable to harassment and other violence forms.

Within the framework of the “Egyptian Observatory for Journalism and Media” keenness to work continuously to improve the journalistic and media environment in Egypt, “They are in Media” campaign is launched today, coinciding with the 16 days’ campaign to combat gender-based violence beginning. “They are in Media” is a continuation for the activities carried out by the Observatory for years in the light of “Gender Justice Program”.

The Observatory chose “They are in Media” as a permanent slogan for the campaign yearly, and chose the theme “Expatriate Women in Media” as the title for the current year, because the expatriate female journalists and media workers are exposed to complex and intertwined challenges. On one hand, they face challenges because they are women in a society that discriminates against them, and on the other hand, they face the challenges of working in journalism and media profession, in addition to being expatriates living far from their families, which makes the burdens on them greater than their peers.

During the campaign, the “Egyptian Observatory for Journalism and Media” intends to publish; a Research paper on the suffering of expatriate female journalists and media workers, Infographics collection about the violations that female media workers were subjected to from 2011 to 2022, a Videos series of expatriate female journalists and media workers witnesses, and another Videos series of Legal Awareness, in addition to organizing a Training course for female journalists and media professionals on “Gender and Violence under the Egyptian Law”.

“They are in Media” campaign aims to raise awareness of violence patterns that female journalists and media workers in general and expatriate women are exposed to in particular, and highlight the challenges they face in order to show them to the public opinion and create community awareness of them. It also aims to present a clear picture to decision-makers from the Syndicates of Journalists and Media Professionals in order to find solutions to these problems.
